Barbra Streisand to perform at Oscars

People, people who watch the Oscars, are the luckiest people in the world… or at least they are if they’re Barbra Streisand fans who plan to watch this year’s telecast.

While the 2012 Academy Awards broadcast was conspicuously short on music – in a break from tradition, the nominees for Best Original Song weren’t even performed – this year’s show should be a very different affair. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are producing the 2013 Oscar presentation, and given their background in movie musicals such as “Chicago” and “Hairspray,” it should come as no surprise that they’re lining up an impressive list of musical performers for the biggest show of the awards season, and on Wednesday they announced an especially stellar “get” for the program – Barbra Streisand. It’s a rare live television appearance for the legendary singer, and her first time singing at the Oscars in thirty-six years.

Zadan and Meron revealed Streisand will be performing on the broadcast in a press release that read in part, “In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music, how could the telecast be complete without Barbra Streisand?”

While Streisand is a two time Oscar winner – taking home trophies for Best Actress in 1968’s “Funny Girl” and Best Original Song in 1977 for co-writing “Evergreen (Theme from ‘A Star Is Born’)” with Paul Williams – this will mark the first time she’s made a musical appearance on the Academy Award show since performing “Evergreen” at the 1977 event. Zadan and Meron haven’t yet announced what Streisand will be singing, but it is expected the broadcast will include tributes to a number of classic Hollywood musicals.

With other performers still to be announced, Streisand is easily the biggest star on the bill thus far, though Adele has confirmed she’ll be on hand to sing her Oscar-nominated James Bond theme “Skyfall,” and Norah Jones will perform “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” from the movie “Ted.” Jones co-wrote the song with “Ted” writer and director Seth MacFarlane, who will be hosting this year’s Oscars presentation.

The 2013 Academy Awards will be broadcast Sunday, February 24 on ABC.
